What is a responsive website?

Responsive websites are websites that automatically adjust to the screen size.

More people are using hand held devices to access websites than the desktop computers they were designed for.

If your website is not designed to respond to smaller devices your visitors will either see a shrunken down version of your website, or just the top corner of your website. Either way they aren’t going to stick around to read it. Search engines also realize when websites are not responsive and will not be likely to include your site in their search results.

The number of smaller devices is continuing to grow at a rapid pace. Everywhere you look people are staring at their phones. So, if you have a website it must be a responsive website.

There are several websites that allow you to see how your site looks on various screen sizes. Here’s one that I use for testing new websites. This example shows the Boston Globe: http://responsivedesignchecker.com/bostonglobe.com. You can also put your URL to see how your website looks by clicking the different icons at the top of the page.

Responsive websites have the same content for all screen sizes, it’s just that it is displayed differently as the screen size shrinks. Three columns could become two columns on a tablet and then a single column on a smartphone.

As we ring in the New Year Morgan Hill Web Works is celebrating our 10th anniversary and we’re doing so by launching our brand new website.

We’ve rebuilt everything from the ground up. Using the popular WordPress content management system and have created a custom theme built on the Genesis framework. We’ve used these two “best of class” applications for creating a rock solid foundation.

While we’ve been building WordPress sites for a number of years now, we have finally taken the time to build our own. I guess it’s kinda like the cobbler who’s children have no shoes. We’ve been so busy building websites for our clients that we haven’t had time to work on our own website for a very long time.

We now also have a blog, and you’re reading our very first post. This has also been long over due and was not easy to do with our previous website. We will be posting information that will be useful to helping our clients with all things related to the Web along with other business tips that you will find useful.

Our new website has also been built to be responsive to mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets, as more and more people are viewing the Web on these platforms.
